As an Electrical Engineer, KL managed technicians, secured capital, and designed control systems in an industry, Agricultural Bio-Tech, where women were scarce. KL recounts of her experience, “Promotions were not generally based on technical expertise. In actuality, it seemed that promotions were, more often than not, based on soft skills, personal appearance, and the ability to network or connect with the right people.” After getting her MBA, KL transitioned from technical assignments to more business-oriented roles such as Business Analyst and Operations Account Manager. Constantly in an environment with men, twice her senior and twice her size, KL always had to present herself in a professional manner even when her counterparts opted for a more relaxed demeanor. She reflects, “What I wore and how I wore it often determined whether or not I connected with a client, garnered team support for a project, or received a privileged assignment from a boss. A professional appearance and proper demeanor were never optional for me.” Dressing the part was so critical that she was able to refine her professional style based on the reactions she received from people when she wore certain outfits. From personal experience, KL knows that very few people are successful on competency alone. Business acumen, along with looking the part, are all part of her success formula.

Given her love for math and problem solving, KL initially chose the field of Electrical Engineering. However, her natural passion for style and fashion never ceased. In 1999, KL left Corporate America to pursue her aspirations in the fashion industry. In 2001, she opened a boutique on the outskirts of St. Louis, MO. As a boutique owner, KL styled countless lawyers, realtors, business owners, professionals and executives. She worked closely with her in-house tailor to learn creative ways to transform a less-than-perfect suit into a winner. As a ready-to-wear buyer, she identified “styles that fit” real women with unique body proportions. There, she began to educate other women on how to find clothes to fit at any weight, shape or height.

An educator at heart, KL loves to teach others, in a step-by-step no-nonsense manner, how to create a personal style that works for both their professional and personal lifestyle . In her seminars, she provides Corporate clients with effective solutions for dress code issues and shows individuals how to create a business wardrobe that builds credibility with support staff, decision-makers, and key clients. Clients love her honesty and frankness while her audience finds her passion contagious. From technical gurus to business savvy professionals, KL invigorates and connects with her listeners.
